How to Spark the Right Changes
“What's the ONE Thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else is easier or unnecessary?”
That's it.
- Gary Keller
As we wrap up a week of Celebrating Change, it’s critical to circle back to Owning Your ONE Thing.
The clarity of knowing and owning your ONE Thing is what provides the confidence and roadmap for making changes in every aspect of your life. But even with your ONE Thing clearly in focus, it can be difficult to know exactly what changes to make - or if the change we make are the right ones.
To help you assess changes in your life, here are six simple questions to see if your changes are throwing off SPARKS!
S - Satisfaction: Does the change provide intrinsic energy and satisfaction? This step emphasizes the importance of internal fulfillment and motivation that comes from making changes that truly resonate with our inner values and desires. This can’t always be immediately quantified, so take some time to get in touch with how the change is really making you feel.
P - Progress: Does this change move me closer to realizing my ONE Thing? Celebrating small wins and recognizing progress is vital for maintaining motivation and faith in the change process. If the change you made doesn’t generate some kind of tangible progress, then maybe try a different angle of change.
A - Alignment: What unintended consequences do you notice? Assessing the ripple effects of change ensures that our actions are aligned with our broader life goals and do not negatively impact other areas of our lives. Achieving your ONE Thing, but losing your health or family is probably not in alignment with your overall best interests.
R - Results: Does the change deliver consistent results? It's essential to monitor the effectiveness of the changes we make to ensure they have a lasting positive impact. Each time you do X, do you get Y result? This simple mindset for results monitoring is an incredibly simple but powerful way to manage and track your personal and team changes. It is especially powerful, since you can stay laser focused on the “X side” of the equation - just make sure to do enough of the “X actions” , and the “Y results” will follow.
K - Kinetic Energy: Do your change efforts lead to overall change momentum? Kinetic energy symbolizes the momentum gained from making changes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining positive energy and action towards achieving your goals. Do wins start stacking up one after the other? Do you start each day with enthusiasm? These are strong signals that you are making the right changes!
S - Sustainability: Does the change have the potential for long-term sustainability? This emphasizes the importance of implementing changes that are not only effective in the short term but also viable and beneficial in the long run. Sustainable changes are those that you can maintain over time, contributing to lasting growth and development. If your pace of change is unsustainable, eventually the law of unintended consequences will catch up, and results will start to slow down or go in reverse!
Conclusion
If the changes you make aren’t throwing off all kinds of wonderful SPARKS, then take the time reassess how and where you need to adjust!
