How to Keep Perspective
If you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change.
- Wayne Dyer
Some changes we choose, other changes are thrust upon us. Change can be especially frightening when the path forward is unclear. Due to illness, unemployment, political unrest or family turmoil, we might experience massive confusion, loss, thankless new work and even physical pain.
It can be incredibly difficult to look for the silver lining in things when things take a dramatic change for the worse, and there are no easy platitudes for these dark moments. Fortunately, in the midst of dramatic change, one thing we can control is how to look at change itself.
Author and speaker Brian Tracy reflects that if we step back - life can look like a series of unceasing problems, punctuated by the occasional crisis. He jokingly points out that everyone in the audience is either just getting out of a crisis, is in a crisis, or is about to have a crisis.
Behind the humor is a critical lesson for dealing with hard changes:
Change, problems and crisis are baked into the core of our human journey.
Keep things in perspective:
1). Literally billions of other people before you have been forced to deal with change, crisis and loss.
2). Keep Calm and Carry On. No matter how bad the situation, in almost every case, you can rebuild and reimagine the future if you calmly set your mind to it.
3). Don’t isolate and exaggerate. You have more resources than you realize. Take some time to count up and assess from who and what and where help might be available.
4). Don’t keep repeating the same mistakes. Sometimes a crisis is the moment where some big personal changes are in order. The sooner you make those big decisions, the faster the crisis will recede into the normal wave upon wave of problems.
5). Don’t get stuck in bitterness. There are many injustices and cruel events in this world. You have not been singled out by some malevolent force for special pain. “Why do bad things happen to good people?” is a cry that goes up to the heavens each and every minute - but the reality is that good and bad things happen to everyone, often without any apparent rhyme or reason.
Change is not always enjoyable - but in reality, everything is change. Learning to Celebrate Change is essential for reaching your ROCKET Goals and also for dealing with the inevitable hardships that life will bring.
