Change at the Speed of Right Now
“Amazonians are leaning into the future, with radical and transformational innovations that create value for thousands of authors, entrepreneurs, and developers. Invention has become second nature at Amazon, and in my view the team’s pace of innovation is even accelerating - I can assure you it’s very energizing.”
- Jeff Bezos
Things can change quicker than you think - both for better or worse. Learning to celebrate all the changes that life brings is both a skill and an overall mindset. So, what are some practical ways to “lean into the future” rather than ignore the future or even actively resist the future?
1). When? Right Now!
For more than two decades, speed has been one of the driving strategies behind Amazon’s incredible success. Jeff Bezos, backed by laser-focused customer obsession, recognized that the immediacy of speed is one of the highest ways to deliver customer satisfaction. The next day delivery infrastructure behind Amazon Prime is one of the more remarkable tech platforms of the modern age - and has forced every other online retailer to follow suit. While you do not need to restructure your life so that that every goal you set gets delivered overnight - it is worth thinking about how you can accelerate the time from when you "Click to Purchase” - i.e. decide on a goal, to when you will achieve that goal. In almost every case, you can achieve a lot more, a lot faster, than you thought possible. If your deadline does not feel at least a bit unreasonable, then you need to re-examine how badly you really want to change.
2). How Big a Change? Bigger than You Can Imagine!
It’s often been said that a 10X change is easier to make than a 2X change. That’s because a 2X change is made along familiar incremental and linear pathways, while a 10X change requires altogether new thinking. If you view change as something akin to “death by a thousand cuts”, then of course you will try to avoid and delay change as much as possible. On the other hand, if you can step back and find the leverage for total and massive change, you can open up new and radical levels of transformation, helping both yourself and everyone around you.
3). What to Change? The True Essentials!
Re-arranging your workspace is a type of change, and depending on your current level of relative chaos, a better workspace could be an important change. However, it is unlikely that moving around some furniture is going to bring 10X changes to your overall situation. How to identify those more essential changes that hold the most leverage? It takes practice and patience to see what truly needs changing - and then even more practice to get started on those truly essential and impactful changes!
The good news about change is that we are all often just a few simple changes away from rapid and surprising success. That does not mean that those high leverage changes will be easy to identify, nor will those changes come without some type of effort and investment - but by looking carefully for the true points of leverage, acting quickly, and looking to make big change instead of incremental efficiencies, you can learn to finally Celebrate Change!
