Change With Confidence

How to Make Decisions Like a Superhero

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust

Change is inevitable, progress is optional!
Change is inevitable, progress is optional!!
Change is inevitable, progress is optional!!!
Change is inevitable, progress is optional!!!!
Change is inevitable, progress is optional!!!!!

Immersed and invested in our routines and relationships, it’s so easy to miss the constant swirl of change that arrives each and every day - until one day we look up and are startled to see a stranger in the mirror, or look across the table and wonder how that adorable little son or daughter managed to disappear so quickly, transformed into a towering teenager!

When setting Rocket Goals, it's a common misperception that making a change is going to be difficult or challenging. However, a central principle of super effective goal setting is to understand in the core of your being that change is coming whether you want it to or not!

Depending on circumstances, the changes you go through might feel difficult or wonderful - but the issue is never “how can I change?”. Instead, the pivotal questions to be asking are “Who do I really really want to become, and what decisions are needed to start becoming that person?”

Making Decisions Like a Superhero
So if decisions are the key for transforming change into progress, how do we make good decisions and stick with them? Whenever Clark Kent decided to turn into Superman, he just needed to find a magic transformational phone booth, and presto - he stepped out as Superman. Incredibly, for us mere mortals, the process of decision making and progress is the same as Clark Kent, except we will need to step in that magic transformational phone booth more than once. In fact, we may need to step into that phone booth for 10 or 20 or 2000 times before finally emerging as the super hero we imagine! The more reps you do, and the more progress they yield, the faster your transformation will be!

This means that there is only one decision you really need to make:
“I am going to keep stepping into that phone booth of change and progress as many times as it takes until I finally emerge as the super hero future self I imagine.”

Once you’ve really made that kind of decision, then in your minds eye - it becomes very easy to remember your own super hero movie in advance - with each workout, with each course, with each meeting, winter, spring, summer, fall- again and again and again, your Rocket Goal transformation is underway. Some days you will emerge and look and feel nothing nothing like a hero. People watching this movie of transformation will laugh. You will laugh….and cry….

….But you keep working, keep putting in the effort, keep changing, keep making progress. Then one day, you look up, and you do recognize the person in the mirror.. it’s the person you have been imaging all this time!
