Embrace Exponential Effort
Mastery. Quality. Speed.
Two Core Abilities for Thriving in the New Economy.
1. The ability to quickly master hard things. 2. The ability to produce at an elite level, in terms of both quality and speed.
― Cal Newport
As the everyday things get easier, the hard things get harder. The New Economy demands tremendous focus and concentration just to keep up, let alone get ahead. If you fail to differentiate in the hard things, you quickly get caught in a spiral of low-paying, undifferentiated easy roles.
Always pick the harder of two paths, even if you might fail. Not because there is some inherent virtue in the harder path, but because that is the path where you will actually contribute something of value in today’s world.
Once you have started to master something hard, you still need to figure out how to reach exponential levels of productivity. Ironically, that does not mean working “hard” in the traditional sense.
At the end of the day, you want to imagine yourself doing something that is incredibly hard with effortless ease. That is what we mean by embracing exponential effort.
In private it means investing countless unseen and unpaid hours of practice, preparation and more practice. In public, it means moving with effortless confidence and timing towards your goals.
Mastery. Quality. Speed = Rocket Fuel for your ROCKET Goals.
