Exponential Enthusiasm
“Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever achieved.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
If enthusiasm is a super fuel for powering your ROCKET Goals, what are the sources of enthusiasm? How can we keep a steady supply of enthusiasm available, and actually learn to grow our enthusiasm exponentially?
First, recognize that your enthusiasm is a rare gift. Don’t ignore it or be ashamed by it. Guard your enthusiasm. Try to avoid situations and people that drain your enthusiasm.
You can build on initial enthusiasm by digging deeper and investing in skills. In today’s economy, where fields are constantly emerging and changing, it is relatively easy to move into the top 10% or even top 1% in terms of skills and value.
Legitimate obligations and requirements can drain enthusiasm faster than we realize. For day to day chores, make sure to put them in the context of your overall plans. Astronauts still need to brush their teeth, clean up after meals, etc! Be resilient with mundane tasks, and don’t let them sap your energy.
Consciously bring enthusiasm to your efforts. Enthusiasm expresses itself as showing up early, being prepared, going the extra mile, and enjoying the process. Sometimes those elements appear naturally - other times you may need to prime the pump and rekindle the fire of enthusiasm.
Last but not least, learn to build deep momentum so that your enthusiasm grows exponentially over time. You should aim to become more enthusiastic as you get closer to your ROCKET Goal, not stagger wearily to the end.
If your ROCKET Goals are feeling like a chore, take time to rediscover and exponentially increase your initial enthusiasm!
