The Effort is the Reward
The Effort is the Reward….
When Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were writing their breakout screenplay for Good Will Hunting, they kept motivated and enthusiastic by focusing on enjoying the process and being proud of the end result - not getting caught up in external validation. Damon recalls - “When we were writing 'Good Will Hunting, Ben and I always talked about just wanting to love it the movie. We would say, 'Even If it's just a tape on our mantel that no one ever watches, we want to love it.' We kind of stumbled into a very wise strategy, which is to try to get most of the rewards from the work itself.”
Getting rewards from the work itself is a fundamental engine for Rocket Goal success. Put simply - THE EFFORT IS THE REWARD.
This mindset does not necessarily happen all at once, but should serve as core northstar for all your projects and goals. If you are not enjoying the actual process of reaching your goal - you need to either dramatically reconfigure your processes and work systems and/or pick a new Rocket Goal that you actually enjoy working towards!
This is not to say that every minute of every work session or practice time will be easy and make you laugh outloud with happiness - rather, you will feel the deep satisfaction of knowing that your efforts are aligned with your One Thing, no matter what kind of struggle you have to endure on the pathway to get there.
The Effort is the Reward! …
Tomorrow we will look at ways to increase focus and effort on demand, no matter how daunting the task you face.
