Keep Kind Intentions

Become a Craftsman of Kindness

If you want to love what you do, abandon the passion mindset - “what can the world offer me?” and instead adopt the craftsman mindset - “what can I offer the world?”
-Cal Newport

Kindness can be expressed in many different ways. One of the easiest and most helpful ways to become a “craftsman of kindness” is to simply do good work, whatever that might be.

Unless you plan on becoming a desert monk - we all need to rely on each other for many different goods and services. Unfortunately, we typically run into countless examples each week where people can’t seem to do the job they are doing and/or don’t bother trying. This is particularly unkind for everyone involved. Why is kind work so important?

First of all, doing good work is a kindness that we do for ourselves and helps maintain a core sense of pride.

Kind and effective work is also an act of generosity, whether or not the person is getting paid.

Because there is so much unkind and uncaring work being done in the world, work done with kindness and competence is easy to spot! Going the extra mile for people is an act of service, but also - there is hardly any traffic at all on the second mile, so you can travel much faster!

Finally, kind work pays unanticipated dividends for both the doer and the receiver. Whether you are baking cakes or building skyscrapers, there are ripple effects from putting kindness into your work. The law of sowing and reaping is always in effect, and sooner or later your acts of kind work or bitter indifference will find a way back to you multiplied many times over.

Becoming a craftsman of kindness is not just about trying to do “good deeds”, it’s about doing your everyday deeds with a kind spirit and dedication to excellence. When paved with kind work, the road to your ROCKET Goals is much less crowded than you might imagine!
