Overload, Adapt, Deload
The Surprising Formula for Peak Performance
During flow state, specific regions of the prefrontal cortex temporarily down-regulate. The voice that says “you can’t,” “you shouldn’t,” “what if you fail” - goes quiet. Your inner critic falls silent. Self-doubt evaporates. Overthinking stops.
- Rian Doris
Rian Doris is the co-founder and CEO of the Flow Research Collective. As you might expect from the name of his company, he is deeply knowledgeable about achieving and sustaining a flow state.
Doris and his team describe flow as operating within a “flow channel”—a zone balanced between two extremes:
😵 Too much challenge: The work feels overwhelming relative to your current skills.
😴 Too little challenge: The work feels monotonous, familiar, or boring.
🎯 The flow channel: The challenge stretches you without crushing you. It feels just right.
The secret to expanding our capacity for great work is to widen this channel. The wider it becomes, the more easily we can tackle demanding projects without creating unnecessary stress.

Two Ways to Widen Your Flow Channel
There are two primary paths:
1. Gradually Raise Your Skills Baseline
You can steadily improve your skills, take on greater responsibility, and raise the overall level of your game. This approach works—but it can take time.
2. Explode the Flow Channel
Doris recommends a faster and more compelling approach: deliberately taking on one massive, highly specific challenge that sits far outside your current comfort zone.
By dramatically raising the upper boundary of your flow channel, you force yourself to discover new abilities, strategies, and reserves of energy. When the challenge is complete, your previous workload often feels much easier.
The key is concentration.
Choose one extraordinary challenge. Do not spread your attention across multiple ambitious projects. Focus your energy, blast past your perceived limitations, and resist the temptation to move incrementally.
The Overload–Adapt–Deload Protocol
🚀 1. Overload
Commit to a challenge that demands significantly more from you than your normal workload. The project should be:
Specific enough to direct your full attention
Difficult enough to stretch your existing abilities
Meaningful enough to justify the effort
Time-bound so the intensity has a defined finish line
Overload is not about remaining constantly overwhelmed. It is about creating a deliberate period of focused intensity.

🧠 2. Adapt
Once you have thrown yourself “into the deep end”, use every resource available to rise to the challenge. You may need to:
Learn new skills quickly
Improve your systems and routines
Eliminate low-value commitments
Ask for help, coaching, or accountability
Strengthen your focus and recovery habits
Discover capabilities you did not know you possessed
The combination of overload and adaptation pushes the top of your flow channel higher. You call upon new reserves because the challenge demands it.
🌱 3. Deload
After a defined period of intensity, step back. Rest. Recover. Reflect. Allow the lessons and new capabilities to become part of your normal operating level.
After metaphorically carrying a 100X backpack for weeks, the 10X backpack that once felt intimidating may suddenly feel manageable.
Deloading is not quitting. It is the phase that converts intense effort into sustainable growth.
Put the Protocol into Practice
Before beginning, answer four questions:
🎯 What is the one challenge that would expand my capacity the most?
📅 How long will my overload period last?
🛠️ What systems, skills, and people will help me adapt?
🧘 How will I recover and consolidate what I have learned?
Yes, this approach may feel overwhelming at first. That is the point.
You do not expand your flow channel by remaining inside the boundaries of what already feels easy. You expand it by choosing one meaningful challenge, meeting it with focused effort, and giving yourself permission to recover afterward.
So here is your ROCKET challenge:
What is one bold project that would require you to become bigger, sharper, and more capable than you are today?
Choose it. Define the finish line. Pick up the heavy backpack. Then overload, adapt, deload - and discover that your old limits were never the true edge of your potential! 🚀
