ROCKET Goals
How to Reach Your Castles in the Air...
“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”
― Henry David Thoreau
For goal setters, setting a clear vision takes time and diligence - but that is rarely their biggest challenge. Instead, once the vision is set, the real question is - how to put the foundation under your goals?
Many science fiction writers have imagined colonies on Mars. However, few if any fiction writers have taken the trouble to calculate the number of payloads actually needed to make a Martian colony a reality. Furthermore - as the sheer number of flights needed becomes apparent, neither did they design a reusable system to cost-effectively launch the requisite thousands of flights.
At the end of the day, it becomes apparent that cost per kilogram to orbit is a key variable for creating a spacefaring civilization. As seen in this chart, SpaceX has already significantly dropped the cost of getting materials into low orbit. With reusable Starships on the way, they are aiming to lower the cost further - to as little as $100/kg!
Whatever ROCKET Goal you are attempting, look for ways to massively drop the cost, time and effort needed to reach your goal. If you have built your castles in the air, you will need to get into the practical details for building the most efficient “launch vehicle” possible!
No matter what field you are working in - ditch the slow, cumbersome, one-at-a-time vehicles of the past, and instead develop super efficient systems and approaches you can use over and over again to reach success.
How to cut the cost of space travel and make Mars affordable? Catch and reuse the rockets instead of burning them up each flight!
