Remember Your Future Self
Crafting Your Future Image
“If you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change.”
- Wayne Dyer
If you want new results for a certain character in your life - namely you, then you absolutely need to re-imagine how that character shows up in life. You will need to change how you look at yourself! We are constantly changing, whether we want to or not. As the saying goes, change is certain - progress optional. If you want to insure that you change in a positive and not random fashion, then mastering visualization is essential.
Creating a detailed and vivid image of your future self is a crucial step in the journey towards personal growth and achievement. This process is not just about setting goals but also about defining who you want to become.
Detailed Imagining: Visualizing a Vivid Future
The first step in crafting your future self's image is to detail it as vividly as possible. At a high level, here are the main components of successful visualization.
1. Choose Your Setting: Start by imagining where you want to be in the future. Consider the environment, the people around you, and what you are doing.
2. Incorporate Sensory Details: Make your visualization as real as possible by including sensory details. What do you see, hear, feel, and even smell in this future scenario?
3. Detail Your Achievements: Imagine the accomplishments that have brought you to this point. What have you achieved? How did you get there?
4. Visualize Your Future Self: Focus on yourself in this future setting. What do you look like? How do you carry yourself? What emotions do you feel?
The Role of Emotions in Visualization
Emotions are a powerful element in the visualization process. They add depth and realism to the image of your future self. When visualizing, it’s important to:
- Feel the Success: Imagine the feelings of joy, pride, and satisfaction that come with achieving your goals.
- Connect Emotionally: Build a deep emotional connection with your future self. This connection makes the visualization more impactful and motivating.
Remember, as mentioned in a previous Daily Rocket article, our future self is constantly evolving. Be open to imagining new versions of yourself as you grow and learn.
Practical Exercise: Step-by-Step Visualization
Let's put this into practice with a step-by-step exercise:
1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a calm and quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.
2. Relax Your Mind and Body: Take deep breaths and relax your body. Let go of any tension or stress. Two short breaths in through the nose and then one long breath out through the mouth is a sure fire way to relax.
3. Start with the Setting: Begin by visualizing the setting of your future life. Spatial computing was not invented in Silicon Valley, but is a core aspect of human intelligence - no additional hardware required!
4. Add Sensory Details: Enrich your visualization with sensory details. A few crucial details are all you need to trigger your sub-conscious to get to work. It will fill in additional details as the goal materializes. Use labeling to call out the key elements of your success, as if your success was being discussed on a play-by-play sports highlight segment.
5. Imagine Your Achievements: See yourself celebrating your achievements. Be sure to consider the effort that will be expended on arriving at your goal. The Effort is the Reward.
6. Visualize Your Future Self: Focus on your appearance, actions, and emotions. This is the new you who is actually there to receive the goal acheivement. He or she will be a different person than the current visualizer.
7. Connect Emotionally: Feel the emotions associated with your achievements. Give names to the emotions, and label how you will feel.
8. Imagine Failure: Spend time imagining how you will feel if you do not reach your goal. Just how awful will your feeling of regret be? Don’t skip this step. Despite all the well-deserved emphasis on “thinking positive” in the visualization literature - the very real possibility of failure is what unlock your brain’s powerful fight response system - propelling you into super focused action!
9. Repeat the Loop in Epochs: An important element of the visualization process is to cycle through your “success movie” in a series of short intense previews - at least 15-90 views, each lasting 30-90 seconds. These are like mental wind sprints driving forward with targeted momentum, not some leisurely jog into a hazy future.
10 Conclude with Gratitude: End your session with a feeling of gratitude for your future achievements. As you learn to Remember Your Future Self with gratitude, a feeling of inevitability and confidence will start to grow - further propelling your and accelerating your results.
In Conclusion
Crafting the image of your future self through visualization is a dynamic and evolving process. As you grow, your vision of your future self will adapt. Embrace this change. Regularly practicing this visualization exercise will help make your future self a guiding force in your daily life.
